Robert Byrd
A colleague of mine had the opportunity to attend a rare fundraiser for Senator Byrd recently. When I say "rare", I really mean it. Apparently, to his knowledge, Senator Byrd has never had a fundraiser before, and he's been in the Senate since 1958 . A couple of things stood out:

- Byrd clearly hated every moment of having a fundraiser. Not that he's "above" having to hold one, but he loathed the actual act of taking a check from someone.
- Byrd's extremely frail looking (of course, he is 88ish), and had to walk using 2 canes.
- Byrd constantly referred to the "good ol' days", meaning the 50's. Now, many older white people may look back to the 50's as the "good ol' days", but I doubt many minorities would. Moreover, I don't know anything about West Virginian economics Circa 1950, but I can't imagine it being that good.
- Byrd's worried about losing, and especially worried about facing Rep. Shelly Moore Capito.
